Family of skin bleachers in Jamaica E-mail
Thursday, 25 September 2008

A British journalist visits Jamaica to investigate our most horrendous beauty secret - skin bleaching. A family of bleachers explain the process of bleaching and justifies the practice as 'style' for even fair-skinned persons who 'tone'.

See her report below.

It hurts when caucasians (or any other race for that matter) discriminate against us based on the fact that we are Black... however it is far more painful when you see your own people hating themselves and going to these extremes to look like those who have actually oppressed us for hundreds of years!! I just don't get it!! There is nothing more physically beautiful than our Black women (with their full lips, NATURAL skin tone, curvey physique etc)!! As a people, we need to find a way to change our perception of what is beautiful (light skinned and or white, straight hair, straight nose and a size 2 physique should NOT be our benchmark for beauty!!). As far as Black men bleaching their skin is concerned, I wont even bother stating how I feel about that because it would not be posted!!!! At the end of the day, it seems like no one group of people are as destructive to itself as we are to ourselves!!!!

I really feel sorry for people who place so much importance on skin colour and what's on the outside. It's awful that a small amount of black people still think being dark skinned is a curse and being light skinned, mixed race or white is a blessing. Some of us really have been brainwashed.

What's on the outside really doesn't matter. It's who you are on the inside - that's what REALLY counts.

By the way, people who bleach their skin actually look sore and weird and not very pleasing to the eye at all. The only people they're fooling with their strange coloured skin is themselves.
